How to Learn Hairdressing at Home
If you are one of those people who love the idea of being able to style your own and others’ hair, but just don’t have the time to join a course, here is some good news for you. You can learn hairdressing from the comforts of your own home. All you need to do is take online home tutorials, start practicing, and you're on your way.
How to go about learning to be a hairdresser
A good first step in training yourself in hairdressing is to take a complete hairdressing course on DVDs or learn hairdressing through an online hairdressing course. Watch video tutorials to observe the correct method of cutting hair. You can register with websites that offer hairdressing training videos and tutorials.
Next, read a book on cutting and hairstyling. Since learning to cut hair is a skill that comes from practice, make sure the book contains theory and is also visually rich. The book should be extremely detailed and contain enough photographs and how-to diagrams with step by step instructions on various stages of hair cutting. This is important so that you gain clarity on techniques from the simple to the very advanced. But, in our opinion a video cannot be beat by a book.
After careful study, you need to practice. Make sure you first practice on a doll's hair. You can buy a doll's head in shops that sell hair products or cosmetology schools which usually have mannequins with doll's hair for this purpose. Buy at least 2 doll heads, one with long hair and one with short hair. That way mistakes won't leave you frustrated as you can move on to the next doll and restart practice immediately. At this stage, persistence will be the key to your hairdressing breakthrough, and with more and more practice you will slowly start seeing great results.
Once you feel confident of having mastered hair cutting and styling on dolls, it is time to practice on your family members. Try cutting your own, your spouse's and children's hair. Make sure you don’t experiment on your family members and cut and style their hair unless you have practiced enough on dolls and mannequins with excellent results.
Restrict yourself to immediate family members and close friends, even though you may be very happy with your hair styling skills. This is because you need a cosmetology license to practice hairdressing outside home, and training yourself through home study doesn't qualify you to earn as a hairdresser in most states of the country.
If you love hair styling, you don't have to wait to join a cosmetology school. You can join an online hairdressing course, read specialized hair-styling books, and practice on dolls, followed by yourself and family members. While this home training may not earn you a cosmetology license, it will provide you with a very useful skill that will help expand yours and your family's hair styling repertoire.
